Viva 7 U16's in Sight of Grand Final Glory
16 Aug 2017 by Grant Johnstone
The Leeton Viva Under 16s team travelled to Young looking to book a spot in the grand final after finishing the regular season as minor premiers. In their first game Leeton played Tumut and initially struggled to find their rhythm. Tumut took full advantage taking a 2 try lead into half time. Leeton came back strong in the second half with tries to Felicity Allen and Jenna Elliot. Exceptional defence from Zoe Locke and Sophie Anthony ensure the scores remained locked at full time. Two 5 minute extra time halves were played in which possession see-sawed. Tumut ultimately taking their chances to come away with a 3-2 win. To make the grand final, Leeton now needed to beat Young on their home ground. The girls started the game well. Consecutive quick plays from Shakiah Byrnes and Marnie Elliot resulted in good field position, allowing Maddison Teerman to take advantage and score great try. Smart play from Sarah Allen who sneakily exploited Young’s defence on the blind side of the ruck saw Jenna Elliot streak away for her second try of the day. Young hit back to make the scores 2-1 to Leeton at Half time. Young again hit back early in the second half to level the scores before Felicity Allen edged Leeton in front. Strong defensive work lead by Lauren Young who worked tirelessly all day ensured the win went to Leeton. Leeton will now play Tumut in the Grand Final next weekend.
